making time ...

This whole royal wedding thing is insane to me. I love a wedding as much as the next person, but I REALLY DON'T get the appeal of today's event at all. Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but had my Facebook wall not been plastered with status updates about it, I wouldn't have realized that I had missed "HISTORY IN THE MAKING!!!" (That's a direct quote from a status. Exclamation points and all.)

But do you know what I think is the craziest thing about the whole royal wedding? It's not the expense. Or the fanfare. Or the dress (Note: I have no idea what her dress looks like).

Nope, it's none of that. It's the sheer number of people who got up at an ungodly hour to watch it happen. The number of people who "made time" to watch. And the fact that so many of those same people, swear up and down that they can't "make time" for exercise. Seriously? You just proved that you can. And that right there is why America is obese - The unwillingness to make time for healthy choices.

And with that, I step off my soapbox.

Am I really the only person who thought that this morning?

  1. Nope. I think it is absolutely ridiculous. I think it's really sad that this wedding has taken up the news, especially with the hundreds of people who are DEAD after the storms in the south.

  2. Yeah it is crazy, I'll admit i do have a girl crush on Kate Middleton (I think she's adorable), but the highlight will be waiting for me on TiVo when I get home tonight.

What I really can't believe is that British citizens are still ok with footing the bill to keep a royal family.

  3. Nope, you're not insane. Or wrong. You're absolutely right. Exercising is about making time. And if you decide to choose making time for this nonsense instead of getting your butt out there...well, it's beyond me.

  4. Nope your not alone, I agree with you

  5. I ABSOLUTELY agree with you. I think it's ridiculous. AND I firmly believe that people will make time for the things that they WANT to make time for. That's why I get up at 5am to run. And why "other" people get up at 5am to watch a wedding of people they don't know.

  6. An excellent point! I just kept wondering why people were getting up early rather than recording it on their DVR?! I have to admit I did set mine to record - I'll probably watch some highlights while I fold clothes/work around the house. . . or if I'm confined to the 'dreadmill' today, maybe while I run.

  7. hahah, that really is a good point! I could care less about the wedding too, I'd much rather get my sleep and if I'm really interested, they're going to play it over and over and over for a while, so I'm not concerned about missing it! Glad I'm not the only one!

  8. I don't get it either. It will probably be all that's on CNN at the gym later this morning. I never made the exercise connection though, good thought!

  9. I completely agree with you with regards to people complaining that they have no time to workout then getting up at 4am to watch the wedding. I DID NOT get up at 4am, or 5am or 6am (I wish I had you and G living next door to motivate me to run at 5am...but I don't) BUT I did DVR it and have been watching it all at 60X fast forward. I am kinda intrigues by it all...and Harry is easy on the eyes! I think it is a nice break from reality for a morning but now at 8:45am life goes back to normal!

  10. Try living in England!!! I myself am boycotting all proceedings including the street party going in on the small green outside my house, ganna go for a run instead.
No hard feelings just not interested.

  11. So true. I thought that if I was able to get up and watch then I should just go for a run. Needless to say I didn't watch and I didn't run either.

  12. You, my friend, hit the nail right on its fat little head.

  13. I thought the same thing! Biigger issues don't get people to 'make time' but a royal wedding when they get excited!

  14. good point about the exercise. i did not think about that part of it...but I was NOT down with waking up at the crack of dawn when I need to work today and then run later. so true though! I cannot believe the number of people that stayed up allll night!

  15. I am right there with you... I actually said to Josh that I felt like the only woman in the universe who didn't really care about the royal wedding. And I always say that anyone can make time for exercise, you just have to make it a priority (like so many people made watching this wedding a priority)

  16. The only reason it was on my tv this morning is because I was getting up for a flight to go run a marathon. I agree. It was sad to see how much our news was covering the wedding over the devastation in the south. i get that it is important, pretty, etc. but not enough to stop my day. :) agree on the exercise. i was telling a friend (who is overweight) that she will find an excuse every day she lets herself…just like you said.

  17. Good point about priorities! Another thing that drives me crazy is that the media is jamming this all down our throats, and then later will say that we clamoured for the info about the wedding. Maybe some are, but I think the majority of us don't care.

  18. I concur! I got up early to live stream the Boston Marathon (and missed my A.M. run) but...that's health-related right?
I can imagine myself getting up early to watch the shuttle launch too.
But the wedding? I REALLY don't care and wouldn't lose sleep for it. Ridiculous.

  19. I completely agree with everything you just said!
I can't wait for all this to be over.

  20. Excellent point! I hadn't thought of that, and you can be sure I will tactfully mention it when I'm with a friend this weekend who falls into that category!

  21. So true! I'm half-English and hubs is full and we still only watched a short clip of it when it happened to be on the news.

    ReplyDelete
  22. YES YES YES! (and you can quote that, exclamation point and all ha!)

I totally thought the same thing. I havent seen any of the wedding stuff and (semi proudly) can say I have no idea what she wore. I could care less if people get into it, but youre right. In one breath its "i stayed up for the wedding" and the next its "I dont have time to work out"

    MAKE TIME.

ha! you got me all riled up.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Agreed! Why get up early and actually do something to benefit your health when you can watch the royal wedding?!?!? My cousin, who is obsessed with weddings (hers is next August and it's already 100% planned), emailed me this morning if I had watched it and I said, um no I was at the pool aqua jogging. I had to google what the dress looked like because she wouldn't shut up about it. *Sigh*

  24. I hadn't thought of it that way. I turned the tv on after reading soooo many status updates about the wedding, saw at few hi-lights while I ate breakfast before my run. No desire here to get up at 4 am to watch the wedding (or to run).

  25. I have no problem with all the people who are oogling and awwwing over the royal affair, both watching from afar and the thousands who are swarming Westminster in Britain... but if any one of them claimed they don't have time to exercise/make healthy food/etc (which surely many of them do), I would DEFINITELY be in agreement with your reaction!

That being said... I plan to watch some of the coverage tonight after work. I didn't tune in this morning because I was busy running 18 miles to work. Nuff said!

  26. I hadn't thought about it that way, but really, so true! I, of course, am so used to NOT having to get up early that I went ahead and dvr'd it so that I can watch it while eating breakfast, lunch and folding laundry. It's all about multi-tasking :) But, I LOVE all things wedding and even tell the hubs that my dream job is to work in a bridal salon helping people find their dream dress... that or be a doula.

  27. You aren't alone....I thought the saem thing. I was out running @ 5am and my usually dark hood had lots of TVs on. Made me sad and then angry. Just get out!!

  28. Nope you are not alone and Nicely said.

  29. Such craziness. Some chicks I know GOT THEIR KIDS UP for a freaking party in the middle of the night to watch this circus.

Both chicks? Wah, I'm so overweight, my BP is so high, I don't have tiiiiiiiime to work out.

    Really?

  30. I love Kate & read a few highlights of the wedding this morning, but certainly didn't get up early for it or plan my life around their big day. I totally agree that people don't always understand/follow their own priorities.

    ReplyDelete
  31. To be honest, the parallel didn't even occur to me. It's funny though.

I value sleep WAY too highly to get up in the middle of the night or early morning to watch tv. If I cared about it, I'd record it. Having said that, I have sacrificed sleep to run.

  32. Can't say that I have the same passion as you, but I was not interested in the least.

However, I had to do 3 hour on the treadmill this morning, so I ended up watching it from loading into the car to the kiss.
I am glad I saw it, but there's no way I would have gotten up early to see it. Or even turned it on if I'd not been a captive audience.

I saw all the HISTORY!!! posts too. LOL

  33. Well said! I have no idea what her dress looks like either...

  34. This is the point. When people ask me "How do you do it??" meaning the family, the home-cooked meals, the full time job, the cleanish house, the running, the etc. I explain that it's a choice and usually it's a choice to NOT watch TV, to NOT veg in front of FB, to NOT lie in bed all morning. But I try not to be preachy. ;)

  35. nope, i was totally pumped to be on my bike for the worst 4 hours of it. yuk.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, I had not thought of it that way until you mentioned it... good point. Just goes to show, if you think it is important you can make time. I recorded it and then watched some of it while I was running on the treadmill.

  37. Amen!

Though I think the hoopla is kind of fun, it is incredibly ironic the way the world works....

  38. I'm totally with you. I almost dedicated an entire blog post to "How I do not care about Will & Kate getting married". Seriously. I can understand if you live in England, because it WOULD be history in the making. But over here...it doesn't effect us really. So who cares??? People get married every day!

    ReplyDelete
  39. there was a wedding this morning?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I completely agree with you! I know what she looked like (the dress), but only because I was waiting for the weather radar on the local news and they wouldn't stop talking about the wedding. I was forced to be part of the madness.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I heard comments (really, more like "complaints") about their first kiss and I responded "Oh, that was today?"

I knew it was coming up, but I'm not making time for it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I completely agree with you....people's priorities now a days are completely distorted.
I am so sick of the royal wedding media coverage, is it over yet??????

    ReplyDelete
  43. Completely agree with ya.

I missed the whole 'event' ... I was outside running. =)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Little delayed but you are not alone and I could get on this soap box for like 5 hours! Take the $93 million that was probably spent on the wedding and save a child in need or feed the hungry or educate the needy! UGH! I did not watch it needless to say : )
