Dilly, the escape artist ...

Do you see this face?

Yup. An absolute cherub. Able of no wrong-doing. Perhaps the sweetest and most adorable creature you've ever seen.

But, something lies beneath the surface. An urge. A desire to be, no, do something more. And that something is launch herself out of her crib.

Yes, you read that right. My perfectly behaved 21 month old has crossed over to the dark side. She's a CRIB JUMPER.

And she did nothing to hide it.

On Monday night, J and I were putting her to bed. We placed her in her crib, kissed her goodnight and got ready to leave. But, before we could walk away, her leg was up and over the rail and she had shifted her body weight out of the crib. And with that I told her to say goodbye to her crib. She'd never sleep in that thing again. And my world as we know it was instantly changed.

There's nothing to hold her back now. Her room is suddenly a danger zone. Her naps might not last the week. And who gets to deal with the backlash? Right. Me.

She doesn't look so cute anymore, does she?

She still looks cute.... just a rule challenger like her mommy. 21 months is a LONG time to be in a crib...

Good luck with the naps.

ohhh I would have gone with the tent! My youngest jumped before she was 2 and that was way to early for me to be comfortable to put her in a toddler. Good luck with the naps!

A cute crib jumper, though!

BW is still in a crib at 3.5 years and is about 8 inches shy of being too tall, but I know as soon as he is out of the crib that naps are a thing of the past. Yes he is old, but the pedi said to keep him in as long as he wasn't jumping. Crib jumping has been my dread every time I have heard a thud coming from his room. We're moving him to bunk beds for his bday (can you sense the dread in my voice). I feel for you!!

Will she let you cuddle with her until she falls asleep? Or possibly just tell her that she needs to lay down in her bed for a few minutes, but doesn't have to sleep.

Good luck!

Have Faith Tonia!!! Think Positive like you always do!! Tyler was out of his crib at 17 months and ended up sleeping BETTER in a "big boy bed" than the crib. I don't know if it was having a sense of independence or what? He went from 1 1/2 hour naps to almost 3 hour naps!! There was one or two night where we had to put him back in his room/bed a few times...but that was it!!! And you KNOW I have a Rule Pusher!!!

And YES, she still looks adorable to me!

The same thing happened to me with now 26 month old...right at his 2nd birthday he began getting out. I did find a crib tent and that has made life so much better. I put him in, zip up the tent and know he is in there...you can find them online, but I got mine at a garage sale.

it's the cute ones you have to worry about. you never know what kind of tricks their going to pull :). I'm not a mom, but I've been a babysitter for over a decade!

But WOW is she cute! My youngest (and only crib jumper) was capable of climbing out for the last year he was in it. Somehow, I managed to convince him that he wasn't supposed to climb out, and he usually went along with that.

sorry but she definitely still looks cute =)

It's scary losing the crib. No way to keep them confined. We lucked out with S. She only crib jumped one or two times and never did it again. So we kept her in her crib until she was 2 and half. Who knows what my boys will do. I am not looking forward to when they start jumping.

Dilly is just adorable!

She still looks cute. My youngest was out of the crib at 16 months. Fortunately, she likes sleep and does actually stay in the bed when it's time. Wishing you luck!

21 months! You didn't really think you could keep one of your girls contained for very long, did you??

(Now you just need to kids proof the inside door knob so she can't escape her room and wreck havic throughout the house!)

She's so cute!! Something tells me she's going to get away with a lot more than crib jumping in her life....

She is adorable!

Both my kids were climbers and were out of the crib well before they were a year and a half old.

Look at it this way, it means she'll be athletic.

Good luck with those naps!

Well, she still looks pretty sweet from over here. Good luck!!! :S

She is adorable! I had one decide to "jump" out of his crib 2 days before his sister was born. Let's just say the stress level went way up and he never looked back. Good luck!

Still a cutie :)

BTW, I'm a little late in my reading, but thanks for answering my question. I understand about your fear, but you are such a strong and determined woman...injury would find you doing tons of cross-training I'm sure!

Shes still a sweety.
I remember those days. Time for a baby gate at the bedroom door.

Ohhh...I remember those days! Embrace the "big girl" bed and make it a big, fun deal for her and she'll keep napping and sleeping just fine! :)

She is cute indeed...I have to agree with the other posts. Uggh, sorry to hear about that. Might be time for a toddler bed...they make some really tiny ones and she will think she's too cool for school and not ever want to get out. :) Yeah right. I've never had crib jumpers but it is just a matter of days before my 16 month old son figures it out. My girls never dared.
Looks like your little one is ambitious like her mama! :)

Nice reading your blog site as I get my feet wet in blog land. I just started my first blog and it will be nice to connect with fellow runners and mothers. Good luck on the crib jumper!

I hear ya. I remember the day my kids started climbing out of their cribs and the shit storm that followed. Stay strong mama and remember that 'this too shall pass'... she will adjust to her new found freedom and nap again... until she doesn't anymore than you can welcome the next shit storm. Hang in there.. we all know how you feel!

Oh man, do I have one of those "angels" too! My daughter is sooo stinkin cute and when she gets in trouble, she tilts her head to the side and says in her teeny little voice, "but Mommy I just love you!" Urgh! Both my kids were crib jumpers from a young age so we discovered cribless worlds early in their life. I feel ya, but it will be the norm soon enough. =o)

She *does* look so sweet and innocent though - maybe it's the pigtails?!?!

Sadly. And not recommended. My mom used to put my brother's crib upside down to keep him in. This was after a neighbor knocked on the door early one morning with my brother by her side... and my mom had thought he was just sleeping late!

Oh, the joys!

Ahhh, a jumper in the disguise of an adorable little girl. Very tricky!

LOL! There's still hope - Shoo never slept in a crib and he was a great napper, so maybe she'll nap for you on whatever you have moved her to.
