MAC Half Recap ...

Today was the MAC Half Marathon. I went really hoping to run sub two hours. I missed that goal by 3:36. (Katye did get her sub two) But shockingly, I am not the slightest bit upset. Because I learned several valuable lessons ...

I learned that EVERYONE will cheer for a cute outfit. Here's Katye and I before the race. And yes, we coordinated down to our shoes ...

I learned that water and Gu is a much better combination for me than Chomps and Gatorade. And I now know that once every four miles is as long as I should go between each Gu.

I learned that I am greedy. By mile three, my overall pace was good enough to get a sub-two. And I knew it. But feeling as good as I did, I decided to push it. And I pushed it too much. And hit the wall.

I learned that I can hold a very high heart rate for a very long time (I averaged 90% of my max and was at 95% of my max for the last 7.1 miles). I'm not sure if this is good or bad, but it definitely reassured me that I left it all on the course.

I learned that you will feel a slight grade if you run up it for long enough.

I learned that little surprises will make your day, even if you don't get the race you want. I arrived home to these from Dallas B @ OBX Running Mama.
I learned that there is nothing better than finishing. And post race bling doesn't suck either ...
And since I know you were wondering, here are my splits and average heart rates for each mile. And if you know anything about heart rate training zones that you'd like to share with me, please pass along the information ...

mile 1: 9:13 - 147
mile 2: 9:03 - 161
mile 3: 9:00 - 167
mile 4: 8:52 - 171
mile 5: 8:52 - 175
mile 6: 8:56 - 177
mile 7: 8:48 - 180
mile 8: 9:04 - 182
mile 9: 9:12 - 183
mile 10: 9:26 - 183
mile 11: 9:45 - 183
mile 12: 10:36 - 181
mile 13: 11:48 - 176
mile 13.1: 1:00 - 180

Great job mama!!!

Yeah, gatorade plus gu/chomps is too much for me too, too many carbs in my belly at once, yuck!

Awesome job! I had the same goal in the fall when I ran my first half and I missed it by just under 4 minutes! But given the course was more hilly than anything I had ever run before, and given that I was ecstatic to have run through all those hills, I wasn't disappointed at all. As soon as I have this baby, I'll start training again and I'll hit that magic number. But running 13.1 miles is an accomplishment any day! Congratulations on a well run race!

OMG! Your matching outfits rock! Laura (My Reason To Run) and I are going to rock some matching outfits soon. Of course they will be bright and fun. Congrats on a great day and all the lessons learned!

Your outfits looked GREAT.. and that's what *really* counts, right? :)

Seriously, congrats on another half! Look like the end was tough, but you held on for a decent finish.

Love, love that outfits and the BLING at the end. Nothing looks better than and outfit with a MEDAL that was well deserved. Great job today!

aww, you guys were so cute!!! love the outfits!!!

LOVE the outfits! How do you run in knee highs for 13.1? I've only done it for a 10K and that was long enough. I guess if you train in them it would work out, huh? Your times look amazing. Jealous!

Well you guys rocked the outfits! And you did a great job with your race. You are so close...just a matter of running the right race. BTW--is this one on the NCR trail?

Congrats on your race! You two hotties did an awesome job and glad you took the positive learning route instead of being bummed! Your time is too awesome to be bummed even if its not what you wanted!

Great job! I do think learning something from a race is almost more important than PR'ing sometimes ;)

I wish I knew something about HR! I know I cannot stay at my max for long before I feel awful.

I think it's fair to take an outfit hotness allowance and shave at least 5 minutes off of that time! Your girls rock! Congrats!

look at those outfits! you two should get an award!

and looking at your hr, it definitely looks like you pushed yourself, which is awesome!! woo-hoo!

OK, you looked SO cute and yes, that is WAY more important than your time!
I am curious about your heart rate too. I'm not an expert but your heart rates look a little high. Was it hot? Dehydrated?

You girls look so cute!! Great job on your run...you are so close, you will get that PR soon...you rock!

Sorry that you didn't get the race you wanted. Thanks for the good advice though, in the lessons you learned. Its hard not to push too hard when you're feeling good. I'll be interested to know what you learn about heart rates.

Way to run a tough race though and if all else fails you were definitely rocking an awesome race outfit!

Nice job with your race!! Way to rock it!! I love the matching outfits:) The two of you look fantastic!

Great recap. Some lessons do hurt but those are the ones that become most important.

Love the cute outfits.

You want to know what is cool about this? You get to sign up for another half and keep chasing that elusive sub 2! The summer will not be boring!! I think your splits were great - and you pushed through awesome! Sorry, not an expert on HR stuff, I watch mine and have an idea of where I should be but really, it's not scientific at all!!!
Great job - those outfits are HOT!

Those outfits are seriously cute! I love, love, love the skirts and the socks! Sounds like you had a great race, glad it was a nice day : )

April said...

Great race!! And as always you look absolutely fantastic! I have total skirt envy! I wasn't able to wear my Miss Matched socks for my half because I was afraid it would rain and they would irritate me. Plan on wearing them for a 10k this weekend. Hopefully I can rock them as cute as you do!
Congrats on your race!

Aimee said...

Hooray for your race! I know you wanted to go sub 2, but you finished and did awesome!

I love your matching outfits...they are too cute!

Uck...with me, any combo of gatorade and gu/beans/bloks/etc...makes my stomach very unhappy!

Take what you've learned and apply it to the next one and you WILL go sub 2! :)
