10 years later ...

This Saturday is my 10 year high school reunion. I always thought I would be excited for this day, but honestly, as it gets closer, it's kind of losing it's appeal.

I think part of this stems from the fact that I had a "movie scene" reunion in my head. You know the one. The girl who everyone expected to turn out one way, shows up and shocks everyone with how she has transformed herself in the years since they last had contact. But now, with the prevalence of Facebook, I feel like I already "know" everything I want to about the people in my past. And they could just as easily find out about me, if they so desired.

And if we are being honest here, I'm not really a social person. I have a few uber-close friends and that's pretty much it. I don't really "try" when it comes to friendships. Like with love, I feel that if people are supposed to be in your life they will be. Friendships should be easy. The ones that are tend to last and those that aren't will eventually dissipate.

With that said, of all the people I went to high school with (I graduated with over 400 people), I only still speak to one person. And she's been one of my best friends since I was three. So, I'm sure Saturday night will be interesting.

But, maybe I am wrong. Maybe I will have a blast and the night will be worth the 80 dollars J and I forked over for it. You never really know.

What I do know is that you are about to be treated to a flashback.

This is my senior portrait ...

And this is me and G on Halloween ...

This is me as the quarterback for our Powder Puff Football team during the fall of senior year ...

This is proof that "the quads" (shown below) ...

are a genetic gift. I've had them all along ...

(Note: I wore those sandals to my senior prom. And I still have them.)

Was your reunion worth the trip back home?

I remember when that hairdo was 'trendy'! ;) And your quads still leave me in awe. Wow!

WOW... what an amazing transformation. I did not got to my 10 year mainly because my youngest was just born, but probably more that I was not happy with the way I looked.

ROCK IT GIRL!!!!!! And hey, bring some bands and business cards, maybe you can get a couple of clients while you are there.

cough cough I went to an impromptu 20 year reunion last spring. It was fun. Apparently most people just remember me being a real quiet person. HA. Which is far from who I am today. It was interesting to hear stories of stuff that went down while I was in the same group of all these ladies. lol I was oblivious to it all I guess. I also think FB has kinda of put a weird spin on reunions. I think almost anyone under the age of 40 is on FB so it's hard not to catch up.

I sincerely hope your 10-year reunion is better than mine. It. Was. PATHETIC! It was fun to see a lot of the people there, but the ones that were in charge of putting it together were the same ones who tried to put together the yearbook when we were seniors, and they screwed that up too.

Have fun! Wear something short and tight! =)

I went to my 20 year last year (I was almost 9 months pregnant for my 10 year, so I missed it), and I was SO glad I did. I went solo, and it was fun to see where everyone ended up. I graduated with ~60 and I think 40 people came!

Wow! You look so different.
I didn't go to my 10 year, didn't want to. You make me feel old, but my 20 year was a blast.
You classmates are going to be shocked!

my husband's 10 year reunion is this Friday too. It's going to be strange as we went to the same high school, but I'm three years younger and my sister was in his class. My 5 year reunion was definitely worth it though.

I went to my 10 year reunion holding my 3 week old 3rd child. There were people there I was SO glad to see that I had lost touch with (about 2 of them actually), and then there were the other 300 people I had to wade through to find the buffet.

I haven't had a reunion yet, but I share your sentiments. I have stayed in touch with the people from high school that I wanted to and the rest I never particularly cared for anyway (I also graduated with a class of 400). Honestly, high school was not my favorite place.

I'm going with my boyfriend to his 10 year on Friday. I'm envisioning being bored out of my mind, but he's looking forward to it so I'll be a good sport.

i went to mine a while ago and it was a two night long affair, which was one night too much, if you ask me. and i agree, with facebook now, you KNOW everything about everyone...maybe not details, but you're not going to get that in a 10 year reunion either. you've stayed in touch with who you want to...really. i don't know if I"ll go to my 20th in a few years...i'm contemplating

Have never had a desire to go to any of my class reunions. Can't wait to hear (read) how your experience goes. Good luck! Have fun!

My 10 years will be next year and I haven't heard anything about a reunion... I think I would do. Definitely would be weird.

WOW, have you ever changed... love that your hair is short again. And I used to wear those butterfly clips all the times.

Your legs rock, girlie!

My 10 year reunion was this time last year. I felt the same way - everyone already knows everything from FB - BUT it ended up being a lot of fun and it was good to see everyone.

You should go! It will be worth it!

No powderpuff anymore....now a lean mean running machine!!!!

go have fun...I missed my 20th but would have liked to go just to show I did not end up in jail (thats a joke)

My 10 year reunion ended up being pretty boring. I was looking better then I had in high school, but truth is nobody cared that much. I also didn't even recognize most of the people there. I ended up talking with the one friend I was still in touch with and maybe 10 other people that I was interested in.

i did my 10 year...i would say it was only sort of worth it. like you said, the people that i would want to hang out with i still stay in touch with. with everyone else, its just small talk...

I skipped my 10 year reunion, not being willing to fork over $100 to see people I wasn't all that fond of in highschool. The few friends I have, I talk to.
A friend did go, so it was fun to get the "dirt" from her. But mostly, it sounded like a high school party. Too much alcohol, and the cliques and dynamics really hadn't changed. I've heard the 20 year is more fun because by then more people have grown up!

Thanks for sharing! My 15 year (????) high school reunion is this spring. I have NO desire to go. I was very unpopular in high school.

You are freaking awesome.

The hair --- I love love love the hair.

My husband and I graduated the same year from the same school and actually were living in our hometown at the time of our 10 year reunion but we did't go. I'm thinking we didn't miss too much though. I bet you and J will have fun though, just think of it as a super fun date night and if you don't feel like socializing with anyone else, don't.

Reunions are a way to reconnect with a younger time. Being that it is only your 10th year reunion and with all the "communication" means available to day, I can see why you'd wonder if you should go. Still it can be nice to see faces from your past and share old memories and maybe makes a few new ones with people you might actually like more now than you did back then.
I hope you enjoy it!

Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm pretty sure that I have a picture of me somewhere with those same butterfly clips in my hair at my commencement ceremony...

My 10 year was fun, but it wasn't a traditional sit-down, name-tag type of affair. It was basically 100 or so people at a restaurant for drinks and appies. I talked to those I knew (and was interested in), had fun - the baby was a good excuse to leave relatively early - and looked up those I liked on facebook once I got home. I'm like you, I definitely think of my high school friends as acquaintances now rather than true friends.

My 10-year... totally not worth it... I don't feel like I have much in common with the people I went to high school with anymore. Pretty sure they wouldn't find me any less nerdy either. I'd rather fly home for the Marine Corps Marathon or something else... ironicly, a few friends from high school have agreed to do MCM with me if I fly up.

you look amazing! We're celebrating our 25th year graduating from high school next year. Unfortunately I can't go back home just for this so some of my batchmates that have migrated to the U.S. will organize something here =)

Seriously can't believe the transformation you've had! You'll be surprised by how much you enjoy the reunion (I hope!). I'm like you--I keep in touch with just 2 friends from high school, but I still thoroughly enjoyed my 10 year when I went. Have a great weekend!

I have my 10 year reunion this weekend too. Not going though!

I think its funny that I don't even think a reunion is necessary because of facebook. I'm now in touch with the people I want to be...and not with those that I don't! Hope you have a great time! You look awesome...show off your mother-runner body!

We are going to my Hubs' 10 year reunion on Saturday and we went to mine in October. My high school experience was similar to yours.

I think it was worth going, but only because I would have been really curious if I hadn't gone. I didn't have an awesome or memorable time.

I hear they are more fun the longer you are out of school.

What great pics! And, your quads are bananas. Why couldn't I get that gene?

Have fun at the reunion.

Oh man - what can I even say about my 10 year reunion? It was 4 years ago, and I am not sure I can handle the 20 year in just 6 years.

Basically for ours, nobody wanted to be there, so everybody showed up completely trashed! It was so expensive for nothing. I paid $150 for two people to go, but then decided to get divorced before the reunion even got here. And then the cliques - my high school was VERY clique-ish. And it wasn't any different at the reunion.

The best part was that the popular girls looked miserable. They stood around too high and mighty to just dance and have fun. And the popular guys all got fat. And suddenly guys were interested in us more normal girls -because we were just having fun.

Glad I went - but at the same time - do I want to relive it? No!

High Reunions are always full of unexpected surprises, even with the existence of Facebook. I was so eager to see my friends and volleyball teammates. I can remember before in Calabasas, physical therapy had been on of our favorite things. We always go to the clinic to have a general checkup and eventually lead to a clinic that provides us physical therapy. Woodland hills, where I currently live is much like Calabas. I have been surrounded with good friends with the same likes that I do. Now, aside from physical therapy, I also enjoy yoga to keep me away from stress.

My 10 year was in September, and it did feel strange going into it because it felt like everyone already knew what I looked like and what I was up to because of FB. BUT. On the night of, we saw some friends not on facebook and it was nice to catch up with them. For the rest of the night, it felt like a dance club filled only with people I knew. My husband and I had an absolute blast (we graduated together), and at the end of the night we agreed that while it was tons of fun we are glad we don't hang out with those people on a regular basis. =-P
