first brick ...

In case you didn't know, although I have raced triathlons before, I have never trained for them. I even wrote a note to myself about how I did the exact opposite of what I should have done. Call me lucky, but somehow, I still somehow manage to place well. And since I've never trained for a triathlon, I also haven't completed a brick (yes, I have biked and then used a run as a cool-down and run than leisurely pedaled, but no bricks).

At first, I thought my workout was going to be a piece of cake. 65 minutes on the bike followed by an eight mile run. No big deal. But then, after five days of thinking that was my scheduled workout, I looked at my plan again.

Oh, crap.

It wasn't 65 minutes on the bike. It was 110. Apparently, I can't read the word repeat.

So, I regrouped. I changed my plan of attack. Three hour and 20 minute brick is kind of like a 22 mile run - at least in time. And I run 22 miles, like ALL.THE.TIME.

Um, yeah. A three hour and 15 minute brick (my actual time) is not the same as 22 miles. When I run 22 miles, I'm usually laughing with my friends, having a great time and I feel bada**. Yes, when I finished the brick I still felt bada**, but I had my butt kicked. I couldn't even stand when Dizzle took my picture.

Lesson learned: Half Ironman training is not marathon training.

Just another brick in the wall of bad-assness. At least you know you aren't phoning it in, right?

Agreed! Marathon and Half Iron training are very different beasts. I felt the same way when I switched in the opposite direction to marathon training.

How did your legs feel on the run?

Not sure why, but I am pretty excited about doing brick workouts!

Love Marlene's comment! Awesome picture. Oh the bike to run...uh...kind of makes you question how good of a runner you are. Well that's how I felt in my sprint.

I love your posts!

Way to go and you are a total bad ass! Way to go SISTER!

Dang, that is intense. And awesome! I frequently misread my training plans. For some reason whenever I see a speed workout written out, my eyes glaze over, and I end up just making something up.

Congratulations to you. That is great and way to push yourself.

Now I want to offer a bit of thought from my training and that is everybody has to do their own thing but can I offer some thoughts on your Bricks? OK Thanks.

If you are riding for 2 - 3 hours then your run off the bike should be maybe 30-40 minutes at most.

I have trained for two 70.3s and never ran 8 miles after a 2,3,4 hour ride. It is usually 20 - 30 minutes afterwards. Some of them are aerobic and others are LT runs.

Schedule a long run day so that you get that in as well but running 8 miles after riding for two hours is a lot......again, that is based on my training.

My crotch hurts just thinking about spending that kind of time in the saddle.

Bad. Ass.

Well done on the brick. That's a great effort!

Really funny. My idea of training for triathlon's is trying to get in as much run and bike time as possible. I never brick. I honestly don't have the time for it....hubby would kill me. I made it thru one 70.3 before the last baby in 6:33, and doing my 2nd one labor day weekend this year....but there will be no bricks. I just do the best I can.

You, on the other hand, are kicking some butt and will actually enjoy your 70.3. Good job!

I learned that lesson when I trained for my first half ironman too! It gets better though..I promise! Just keep doing those bricks b/c they are KEY to having a great race!!
