Three Things Thursday ...

Ignored - I'm confident that this happens to all moms, but when J is around, I pretty much disappear. My kids completely forget who I am and they all vie for his attention. On more than one occasion, I have been told, "Guess what, Mom? I love Dad." or "That's OK, Mom. I'd rather hang out with Dad anyway." or "Mom, go away!" This effect is amplified when there other "preferred" adults around. For example, at the mere mention of Grandpa or Grandma's name, the girls go crazy. And they completely ignore me.

Tomorrow, J's parents arrive, which means in 26 hours I will be rendered useless. Well, unless someone misbehaves. Because then, I'm the one who has to play mean cop.

Thanksgiving - Since J's parents are visiting this weekend, we are going to have Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday. My first Thanksgiving as a vegetarian and I am kind of at a loss for a main course that isn't Tofurky. Most everything I find is really just a side dish. Any ideas on what vegetarians eat on a day that focuses on meat (other than pasta)?

Munchkins - In two days, J and I will go head to head in a Munchkin eating/running challenge at the Dunkin Donut Munchkin Run. I have no intentions of racing this 5K, in fact, I am going to run the whole thing with J (at his pace). And then I am going to eat more Munchkins than him. Because really, that's the true contest here. And although he's nearly twice my size, I think I have the advantage. Here's why ...
  • My 5K PR is 22:04.
  • His 5K PR is 29:48.
  • Running at his pace is going to be considerably harder for him than it will be for me.
  • Since I will be running at an "easier" pace, I will be able to consume more without it bothering my stomach, thus winning the head-to-head battle.
It's a good theory, right?

I'm going to be posting a whole lot on how to have a Vegan thanksgiving, but since you're having yours sooner, here are some of my ideas: a hearty soup or chowder loaded with tons of veggies & potatoes, a loaded sweet potato, or if you want a really hearty main dish other than a soup I would do a casserole. They're my favorite. Here's a few different casserole recipes you might like:

And I'm going to put this one because, quite frankly, I've made it like 4 times in the past month & absolutely love it, even if it is on my own blog. I do think it would make a great vegetarian friendly main dish because it's super hearty and amazingly tasty:

Hope this helps!

^ (Obviously, I don't put chicken in my pot pie)

My husband is a vegetarian and he just loads up on side dishes...but he's ok with that because there are usually more than enough of them to make a meal! :)

I will be at the donut race!! I keep going back and forth about whether to race or just enjoy it...my PR is nowhere near as awesome as yours (although faster than your husband's!) :), but I do have to work at it, and wouldn't be able to consume many donuts if pushing that hard. We'll see. I'm excited to maybe see you there!!! I will probably NOT approach you because I'm totally shy, but if you see a crazed woman with 4 wild children...that's probably me. :)

Dang I want to DonutRun. Though I am not a DD fan ... we don't even have them here. Lamars are my poison of choice - if you ever hit a mountain state you should check them out.

I didn't realize you were fully veggie now. Well the veggies in my family (omnivores too, come to think of it) enjoy Russian Veggie Pie on big food holidays. It's very tasty though a bit of work. I think it was originally a Moosewood creation so you know it has a good pedigree. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/russian-vegetable-pie/detail.aspx

How about some kind of salmon dish? Like a simple broiled or grilled salmon. (Was thinking you were pescatarian so if you have phased fish out of your diet completely ignore this suggestion - I might have missed that blog post! ha ha).

So jealous of your DD Munchkin run. There is a Krispy Kreme run in Raleigh in February that I am dying to do. Trying to justify the 6 hour drive. :) It was listed as "a race everyone must do once in their life". How can anyone resist that?

That's awesome about the donut race. It sounds like fun!

My family doesn't really eat meat in general, so we used to just do a giant brunch for Thanksgiving. Now that I go to Mike's family's house, I just eat all of the sides minus the stuffing. I figure it's easier than being the whiner that makes them make more food for me.

Awww, I can't imagine when my kids start ignoring me! They're at that age where all they want is Momma!

My mom made a nut loaf for the vegans in the family last Christmas.

I'm completely unneeded to invisible when my husband is around.

Poor J doesn't stand a chance.

no veggie suggestions, just a question. Although I rarely (if never) eat red meat but when I have guests over I always cook to their 'diet' when I have been to friend's homes they have done the same for me (making sure there are choices for me to eat). Do you not have any meat/animal products at all now? The whole family? Not judging, just interested in how you handle it.

Lentil loaf is what comes to mind.

Have fun with all that family! :)

We make a fantastic butternut squash soup and bread for Thanksgiving every year. It is sweet and savory and totally fall-ish. I can send you the recipe if you like :)

Someone (Kovas maybe?) posted this today and I thought of your post:

Have FUN at the donut run!!

NO help on the vegan, mainly because I plan on eating more meat than carbs. Carbs seem to do funny things to me, one of which they make me very sleepy.

Good Luck in finding something.

i really dont care for turkey and end up just eating the sides anyway…can somebody else do the turkey and you just skip it? i think the munchin run sounds fun! and yes, i like your theory. you win.

Good luck with your vegetarian Thanksgiving. I've got totally no ideas for you except to maybe Google it.

And I'm loving your ideas on how to beat your husband. It's our job to let our husbands know that they're definitely the inferior sex so you go girl!

You can totally take him in the donut eating contest...

Jealous jealous jealous! I totally want to do a race involving doughnuts!

I have the opposite problem..my boys are so used to me being around all the time (b/c my husband works alot), that when he's around, they still come to me for everything. I literally have to say, "Boys, I'm not the only one here, you can ask your dad you know."

We're vegetarians, and it definitely was a challenge to think of things for our first vegetarian Thanksgiving. But, whatever you do, DON'T do Tofurky...yuck!!
We made stuffed acorn squashes, potato and kale mashed potatoes, maple roasted vegetables, fresh sauteed green beans, and some other things I forgot! If you google vegetarian Thanksgiving meals you will get TONS of ideas!!

Good luck with Thanksgiving!

But I REALLY can't wait to find out how this donut run goes down!

I'm always ignored. I think it's the daddy-as-prince thing. Sometimes it's sweet, sometimes it's annoying. Like when my oldest was a baby/toddler and learning to talk, I'd always say "I love you" and she'd smile and coo. Then one day she finally said it - to my husband. Really?!

I can't wait to hear how the munchkin run went. Totally the best race idea around! :)
