collections ...

Dizzle is the type of girl who cherishes everything. She finds beauty in some of the most unbeautiful things. I love this about her. And I hate it. Because she CONSTANTLY wants to start of collection of things. And I would rather her not. Basically, she is a saver and I am a purger. Our styles don't mix.

And although I am not a fan of her piles of cherished "junk", I do my best to allow her to express herself as she chooses. Her collections started with leaves. She would find them, press them flat in a book and the store them away. After that came stickers, which she accumulated on her lunch box. And in the past few weeks, it's been Dum-Dum Lollipop wrappers. When I asked her why she wants to collect these things, she said, "Because they are beautiful."

But yesterday something changed. We went to a birthday party of one of her classmates (a boy) and upon leaving she was given her party favor, which included a matchbox car. It was not the first one Dizzle had ever owned (we have about 10 in our house), but this one was special. And by the time she went to bed last night, she was BEGGING me to let her start a car collection.

When she woke up this morning, she asked me again if I would unload piles of cash so that she could collect mini-cars. At which point, I turned to her and asked, "Dizzle, can you tell me why you want to collect cars?" To which she replied, "Yes. I like A (the birthday boy). And he has thousands of them."

Really, Dizzle? A crush at five? Aren't you a little young for that? I mean, at least you know that boys like it when you share their interests, but COME ON. Give your mom a break. At least wait until you are a teenager ...

That is too funny! I'm with her...collecting matchbox cars was way more fun than barbie dolls when i was a kid. hey, maybe some will be worth a lot of money one day when she's 75 years old; think of it as an investment. she can pawn it or auction it off to help generate income since social security will no longer exist. have a great weekend Tonia!

That is really cute. It's amazing how early their crushes start right? I took my niece to red robin for her 5th birthday (a couple years ago) and she kept giggling and asking me if I noticed our "cute waiter boy". I swear, she batted her lashes at him repeatedly!

That is so sweet! My daugter is a collector of all things too but she is the matchmaker between all her friends. It is so funny to hear her talk about how this one would be so perfect for you and no that one is too bossy for you. Kids are so great!

LOL....crushes start so early now! My DD is also a collector of everything. The one I hate the most is the rocks, especially when they accidently get in the washer and dryer!

The Bug (also 5) has this little girl in his class and on his school bus, they each get sad if the other doesn't sit with/near them. He's already told me he wants to marry her and have a big party like mommy and daddy did.

BTW- at our house we collect rocks. Yeah those are fun to find everywhere.

I love the stories about your kids. They always make me smile.

Ha ha, that's so cute! My son "collects" scraps of paper, he's always asking for my receipts and gum wrappers from my purse. I'm not as good as you though, I say no and throw them away. LOL

My son had a crush on a little girl this year too. He is 5. ;) They kept saying they were going to get married while they were at school. Then one day she dumped him for a little boy that had a smaller head. That is what she told him!!! Gotta love kids ;)

Hopefully she won't be collecting cats when she reaches adulthood.

Just wait till she's older. It'll be real cars or something.

My first grader has a crush too. She talks all the time about her boy and how they eat lunch together and play at recess... it has my husband totally freaked out. Teenage years should be fun!

When my son was five he told me that he and Stephanie (from kindy) had an affinity. I didn't know he could have a crush at that age but I was more bemused by his vocabulary

And my four year old son is wanting Barbies to play with. We should get the two of them together.

Or, perhaps she has realized that it is the cool guys that have the cool cars?

My 4-year-old has a major crush on Oliver in Hannah Montana. It's crazy how early it starts.
