Three Things Thursday ...

Swim Props - On Tuesday morning, I hit the pool for 2500 meters. My main set was 12x100 meters  at 1:45 with a 20 second rest. I was feeling strong. I was feeling like I was working. Right before my last 100, the guy in the lane next to me asked if I was doing intervals (he was). I said yes. He asked what my workout was and I told him at which point he turned to me and said,

"Oh! You're a real swimmer."

Part of me wanted to laugh and say, "Obviously, you don't know any real swimmers." But, instead, I just said, "Thanks," and went back to swimming. It occurred to me later that his comment was a huge compliment and that until then, I really didn't consider myself a real swimmer. Kind of like the person who says their not a real runner just because they haven't done X, Y or Z or because they don't run a certain pace.

Truth is, I am a real swimmer. Sure, I've never had a day of instruction in my life and the first time I swam 50 meters continuously was only 15 months ago. It doesn't matter. I'm owning my epicness ...

Mouth Muscles - The other day Dilly and I were driving to pick her sisters up from school. Halfway there, she started a conversation with me about exercise.

Dilly: "Mom, did you know if you exercise you have more energy?"
Me: "Sure do. I exercise every day."
Dilly: "Me too. I can exercise when I am on the couch."
Me: "Um, OK."
Dilly: "And Dizzle is always exercising her mouth muscles ..."

Yup, she said it. Dizzle never shuts up ...

Here Comes the Bride - This afternoon, we are headed to Pennsylvania for my sister's wedding. While I am very excited for the actual festivities, I am really not looking forward to the 7+ hour drive or the fact that the high temperatures are expected to be below freezing and it is currently snowing there. I moved south for a reason and part of it was so that I never had to wear a strapless gown in the cold.

Honestly though, I know we'll have a blast even if we are going to, as Doodle puts it, "a wedding in the middle of nowhere ..."

half truths ...

When I woke up this morning, I didn't want to get out of bed. I was comfortable. Sure, I set my alarm for 4:30 a.m. knowing it would be one of the only chances I had this week to swim. But, for a minute, I considered shutting off the alarm and rolling over. I told myself I'd find the time later. That I'd squeeze it in somewhere.

My heart and mind knew it was a lie. If I didn't get up in that very instant, I probably wouldn't swim until next Sunday. Not a big deal if you are just cross-training. But, kind of important if you are building your base so you can face 140.6. I reminded myself that some choices are worth getting up for. That I wasn't going to regret leaving my comfy bed once I jumped in that pool. It was just another in a long list of half-truths I've told myself over the years to keep my motivation high.

Truth be told, I did kind of regret leaving my bed when I jumped in that pool. It was cold. Much colder than it usual and it took some serious negotiation with myself to stay in.

Again, I told myself another half-truth. It's odd how something that is equal parts truth and lie can be completely motivating or stop you dead in your tracks. It all just depends on your perspective that day. And today, I chose to believe that there was a little more truth than lie in the promises I told myself. I had faith that I'd appreciate a solid effort more than a return to the warmth of my home. I had to. I know you never get anywhere you want to go unless you push yourself.

For 50 chilly minutes, I pushed past my desire to stop. I lost myself in counting laps and daydreams of swims to come. I thought about how hard it felt in that very moment and how much harder it will feel on race day. I acknowledged my weaknesses and envisioned a day when those weaknesses had been wiped away. It was just me, the water and a series of half-truths that I was choosing to have a little faith in.

When I got home, the sky was ablaze. Blue and pink. Orange and yellow.

All those half-truths had paid off. They got me right here to this very moment. A moment where the day seemed limitless and full of potential. It was worth every second.

Three Things Thursday ...

Accountability - I mentioned on Monday that I had been lacking some accountability in my training. And although I have done my best to ignore the "I will do it later" thoughts, I still can't force myself out of bed at 4:30 a.m. to get my sweat on. My bed is just too cozy and two more hours of sleep sounds pretty much like heaven.

With that said, I have been getting my workouts done. And yesterday's swim served as the perfect example how I work harder when I step out of my solo training ways. You see, when I got to the pool yesterday, my friend (and future IM training partner) Sally, was already swimming. I jumped in the lane beside her and just tried to keep up. (Note: I couldn't keep up with propellers) I swam hard, but comfortable. And somehow, I finished the 3000m workout in 58 minutes. I looked back and the fastest I have ever swam that distance before was 1:03. So basically, I am awesomesauce. And all it took was a little peer pressure.

Crossfit - On Saturday morning, I am running 8 miles. Four hours later, I am taking my first Crossfit class. I'm thinking this may be a recipe for disaster.

I know that I have endurance and I know that I am strong, but I am not confident that either of those things are going to fully prepare me for the hurt-fest that awaits me. Plus, I have a severe lack of coordination and box jumps scare me. If it wasn't for my undying need to impress people, I'm not sure I would make it through alive.

Thank God Sunday is a rest day ...

Costumes - For some reason, we have about 20 Halloween costumes of various sizes and themes in our home. On Monday, I laid them out for the girls and let them choose one. I had plans in my head of how we could all coordinate costumes if I could just "steer" the girls in the right direction. But, no such luck.

Dizzle decided to take parts of two costumes and create a fairy costume (Note: There were perfectly good, pre-assembled fairy costumes to choose from). Doodle went with a witch costume that she wore two years ago. And while the costume still fits (with leggings added), the hat is crazy small on her head. So small that it's never going to stay on. I'm thinking I will hide the hat and give her wings and she can be a sorcerer fairy. And Dilly chose to be a spider, also her costume from two years ago. It has gone from being dress length to shirt length and the hat doesn't snap around her noggin. But, she's too freaking cute to say no to.

Three Things Thursday ...

Trial and Error - (Note: I'm about to be cryptic) For about 11 months or so, I have been a little "off" health wise. To the general public, I probably seem fine, but those who know me have watched me grow more and more frustrated. I've had a billion and one tests run. And although I have learned a lot about myself and my health in the process, I have been left with no answers. Not sure where to turn next, I've decided to turn to some non-conventional methods for curing my ailments. It's been a few days and although I am not ready to say I'm getting better, I have noticed some differences and am feeling optimistic.

Disco Ball - This just showed up at my house. I seriously cannot wait to wear it. (Look, for me in lane two at the Y tomorrow. Like you'd be able to miss me.)

It's epic and the picture does not accurately depict the shimmer of this suit. I know you're jealous.

Outdoor Running - I haven't done a lot of outdoor training in the past year. Between J's travel, a schedule that didn't seem to mesh with my run group, my aforementioned health woes, and some freakishly hot temperatures, I have opted to be buddy-buddy with my treadmill. It's fine. It's not about how you get it done, it's just about getting it done.

But, thanks to the return of the school year (my first kid free time in 7.5 years!) and some fall-like temperatures, my little sister, G, and I rocked it out yesterday morning.

post-run glow ...
And I even convinced her that talking while running is possible and enjoyable. Oh, and despite her fears, she's going to crush her first half marathon next month.

Patriots Sprint Triathlon Recap ..

Location: Williamsburg, VA
Date: 9/9/12
Temperature: 65 degrees @ start
Official Time: 1:39:18
Place in Division: 3/8 (Athena)
Place in Gender: 103/218
Overall Place: 320/532

The Good:

My Mental State: Leading up to this event, I had a lot of mixed feelings. In recent days, I had switched from the Sprint distance to the Half Iron Distance and back to the Sprint and was left questioning whether or not I had made the right decision. It wasn't until the day prior to my race that I was confident that I did the right thing. But, when I woke up on Saturday morning, as my friends raced the Half Iron event, I wasn't jealous. I didn't feel like I was missing out. If anything, I felt relieved. Proof that I was supposed to race the sprint.

post-race glow ...

The Bike and Run Courses: I absolutely loved the last two legs of this course. The bike was mostly flat (or false flats) with a few gentle rollers. It was totally suited to my giant quads and to my personal preference of not liking to have to haul my 160 lb frame up hills. The run course, as described, was PANCAKE flat. After a slight climb out of transition, we ran an out and back along a bike path. Other than a lack of shade in some sections, it was ideal.

My Bike Speed: Although my bike split indicates a speed of 17.2 mph, I actually averaged 18.7 while moving. The combination of a long run from T1 to bike mount and slick conditions that had me fumbling while clipping in, ate a huge amount of time. Let's just call it as it is: Transition FAIL.

My Run Split: I had two goals heading into the run. First, don't give up. And second, hold the pace I run in training. Having not raced a Sprint in over two years (and even that was a joke), I wasn't sure of the pacing and just wanted to feel strong. There would be no blowing up after the first mile of the run. I was controlled and consistent and I averaged an 8:49 pace - exactly like in training.

Beating the Pain: I'm not really sure that a half Ironman is any more challenging than a Sprint. I think you just approach it differently. Kind of like how a marathon and a 5K can be equal in many respects. When it comes down to it, regardless of distance, you just have to beat the pain. You have to outrun it or silence it or ignore it. I accomplished that on Sunday, something I haven't been able to do in quite some time.

Podium Finish: When I finished racing, I was psyched. I felt good. I raced strong. Then, I found out I finished 3rd in my division. It was just icing on the cake.

yes, I realize none of us really look like Athenas ...

Awards ...

The Bad:

Transitions: The transitions in this race were crazy long. A quarter mile run from the swim (thankfully in grass). A considerable run to the bike mount. I know that logistically, it couldn't have been set up any other way, but still ...

Open Bike Course: I know it can be a challenge to completely close roads during a race, but it would have been nice. On two separate occasions, I got caught behind a slow moving vehicle (as in slower than my bike) and couldn't get around. Kind of frustrating considering that a few seconds can make all the difference.

The Ugly:

My Transitions: Um, yeah. For all my training, I really suck at transition. I nearly fell mounting my bike. Perhaps, practice once in a while would help.

The Swim: This open water swim was supposed to be 750m. Not a single person that I talked to clocked less than .6 miles. Personally, I came in at .658, which is 1060m. Thing is, I didn't swim off course. I literally hugged the buoys. Oh, and then there was the chop and the cross-current. Needless to say, the swim wasn't the highlight of my day.

August Rewind ...

Run Miles Ran: 96.25 miles

Bike Miles Rode: 248.4 miles

Swim Meters Completed: 17150m or 10.65 miles

Rest Days Taken: 7. Surprisingly low considering how off my training game I have been feeling.

Highest Run Mileage Week: 8/20-8/26: 27.25 miles

Highest Bike Mileage Week: 8/6-8/12: 86.1 miles

Highest Swim Volume Week: 8/6-8/12: 6650m or 4.15 miles

Long Runs Completed (10+ miles): 3

Current Book: The insane amount of traveling I did in August really cut down my reading time, but I did still manage to finish two and a half books of the Hunger Games Trilogy. Despite not seeing a preview for the movie prior to reading the first book (and totally having a different picture in my head), I so get what all the hype is about.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: Vampire Diaries. My sister and I just watched the entire third season over three days (obviously, I wasn't sleeping much). And now that we finished, I'm kind of ticked that I have to wait another month until season four begins.

Current Colors: Orange and Pink. Much like my current wrist wear ...

Current Drink: Grape, Banana, Lemon-Lime and Strawberry Lemonade Nuun. Can't get enough of that stuff ...

Current Song: Pound the Alarm - Nicki Minaj

Current Triumph: We survived summer and all the craziness that went with it. I learned what I can handle and what I can't. I came to appreciate that you don't have to do something just because you can. Reaching your goals shouldn't be at the detriment of others. Sometimes, you have to be realistic about the sacrifices you make and how they affect those around you.

Current Goal: Be a better me. Each and every day. And to crush my sprint triathlon this upcoming weekend ...

Current Blessing:
Generally, I feel like my whole life is one big blessing and I am entirely grateful for that. I don't take anything for granted. Not even for a second.

Current Excitement: Let's see. Where to start? Patriots Sprint Tri is on Sunday. The girls start school tomorrow. We go back to Disney in 29 days. Lots of exciting things in the next few weeks and if we are being honest, I just have a good feeling about the next few months.

Three Things Thursday ...

5K - Since we had a change in our weekend plans, I signed the girls and myself up for the Autism 5K on Saturday. I love this race. So much so, that last year, I ran this race in a sling. It's a great course (think fast and mostly flat), it's a great cause and it's a great time with my run posse.

However, unlike the past three years, I will not be racing. Since J is out of town, I will be pushing Dilly in the stroller and walk/running the race (at a 1/1 or 2/1 interval) with Dizzle and Doodle (it's Doodle's first 5K). They have only run twice in the last month and nothing close to three miles, which will likely make for a lot of complaining on their part. Oh, and it's supposed to be like a billion degrees out. I'm sure they will be psyched about that.

RMR - On June 5, I am having my resting metabolic rate tested. I am really hoping that it will give me some insight as to why I am gaining weight and/or unable to drop weight despite consistent training and diligent calorie counting. I figure there are two scenarios here.

1. My RMR is really low, thus my 2500-3000 calorie per day diet far exceeds the amount that I actually need.
2. My RMR is really high, thus my 2500-3000 calorie per day diet is inadequate for weight loss and my training level.

Honestly, I'm not really sure which scenario I prefer. The thought of cutting my food intake makes me cringe (I love food), yet the prospect of eating more than I already do kind of hurts my stomach.

Swim Success - Ever since I got my new tattoo, I have been sitting out of swim workouts. Yesterday, I was my first day back and I crushed it. My workout called for a warm-up followed by sprints of 10x50m with 15 seconds rest, 5x100m with 20 seconds rest and another 10x50m with 15 seconds rest.

The last time I did this workout I averaged 0:56/50m and 1:58/100m. Yesterday, I averaged 0:53/50m and 1:53/100m, with my fastest 100m in 1:49. I'm pretty sure that's a huge amount of time to drop in a month.  It was awesome.

Bike Miles Rode: 303.5 miles

Swim Meters Completed: 13931 meters or 8.65 miles

Rest Days Taken: 7

Highest Run Mileage Week: 4/9-4/15: 30.58 miles

Highest Bike Mileage Week: 4/23-4/29: 90.4 miles

Highest Swim Volume Week: 4/23-4/29: 4700 meters

Long Runs Completed (10+ miles): 3

Current Book: I just cracked the spine on Train Like A Mother. Now if I could only get a moment to read it ...

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: Two words - Vampire Diaries. My little sister has the first two seasons on DVD and I have a new way to pass the time while I'm on the bike trainer.

Current Colors: Blue and Orange. Like my hair and shirt combo ...

Note that my shirt says, "Sissies Play Contact Sports." So awesome.

Current Drink: I'm on a rotation of water, Nuun and Dunkin Donuts coffee.

Current Song: So Good - B.O.B.

Current Triumph: I crushed 50 miles on the bike yesterday and I found my Run Love this morning, when my scheduled four miler turned into seven. Basically, my training is epic right now.

Current Goal: Be a better me. Each and every day.

Current Blessing:
Generally, I feel like my whole life is one big blessing and I am entirely grateful for that. But, having my little sister move in with us is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread. You never fully understand how much easier things can be with an extra set of hands (or a live-in babysitter) until you have it.

Current Excitement: Having made the Nuun Hood to Coast team is pretty much at the top of my list right now. Well, that and Dizzle's 7th birthday, the end of the school year and our impeding trips to Indianapolis and Disney. It's going to be a good few months ...

Peluso Open Water Swim Series Race #1 ...

After Ironman 70.3 Texas, I knew I needed to get some more experience swimming in open water. During that race, it took me 38 minutes to find my swim groove. It was ugly. And I really don't want to experience that again.

So, in an attempt to face my fears, I registered for a local open water swim series, which consists of three 1500m races, one each in April, June and September. Then, I looked at last year's results and I freaked out. These people were CRAZY fast. And I was going to get schooled. (Note: I later found out that last year's races were 750m, not 1500m. While the times were still fast, I should have been able to hold my own.)

Yesterday morning was the first race in the series.

Thanks to our nerves and our OCD tendencies, Sally (who's training for IMFL) and I showed up about an hour before we needed to. The course wasn't even set up yet. The site was beautiful.

looks can be deceiving ...

But, due to several recent rainstorms, the water levels were crazy high (9") and the current was wicked fast. Like "this swim is not for beginners" fast. Fan-freaking-tastic!

a buoy with a wake. never a good sign ...

I was not feeling good about the situation. We had been hearing all week how challenging the conditions were going to be and how there was a chance the event would be postponed. I knew deep down that it was going to be rough, but, I didn't want to just chicken out. It was one thing to get there, warm up and decide that it was unsafe for me to swim, but it was another to just bail all together. And we all know, I'm not the quitting type.

(Note: this video does not accurately show the current. Or the extent of my anxiety)

So, we decided to get in the water and give it a shot. But, before we did, a few things were brought to our attention.
sexy. i know ...
  • The race would still be two loops, but shortened from 1500m to 600m (not a good sign).
  • That yellow buoy (pictured above) would be a pull out point. If you dropped back to it, you were out.
  • The water levels were high, the current was strong, but there wasn't a lot of debris, so the race would go on. (Doesn't seem like the best reason to not reschedule, but OK.)
  • Anyone who got in the water for warm up and decided not to race could defer to a later event.
Awesome!

Anyway, we got into the water.

And started swimming.

In place.

As in, NO FORWARD MOTION.

Sally and I looked at each other and pretty much in unison said, "There is no way this is happening."

And we bailed. Swam to shore and took off our timing chips.

It was kind of demoralizing at the time. I don't like to give up, but I knew that it was going to be a total fail. If I was able to swim to the turnaround, I don't think I would have had the strength to do the second loop. And I know that I would have been really embarrassed if I started and then got pulled out the water because that little yellow buoy and I became best friends.

So, instead, Sally and I hit the pool for a timed 1500m. And we crushed it.

30:44 - Way faster that I've ever swam a 1500 before.

It kind of made that embarrassing walk out of the river worth it.

UPDATE: This video is from the actual race. Proof that I was not exaggerating.

Three Things Thursday ...

Sign Up - Today is the day that Doodle has been looking forward to for months - Kindergarten registration. How did my baby grow up so fast?

Last weekend at soccer. Note: blue hair gets WAY MORE stares than pink.

Anyway, she's been talking about it incessantly and even started a countdown. I really hope she realizes that all it entails is me filling out a bunch of papers and her being "screened" for readiness/placement. We might need some cupcakes to deal with the let down.

On Film - I know you have been sitting around for months thinking, "TMB talks about her swimming so much. I really wish I could see what she actually looks like when she's getting her fish on."

Well, wonder no more. Thanks to the cell phone video taping skills of my girl, Sally, you can now watch 38 seconds of my attempts at not drowning.

Go ahead, critique away. Especially if you know the key to swimming 1500m in 14 minutes ...

Find Your Fit - Spring sports have started up again around here. Doodle is back playing soccer and as expected, she is kicking a** and taking names. Soccer (well, all contact sports) is Doodle's thing. She's strong and coordinated and a little ball of muscle. Oh, and there's that whole not liking to lose thing. It kind of makes her unstoppable on the field.

Doodle (#3) on a breakaway ...

Need proof? She scored three goals in her first game and cried that she didn't score more. Go figure.

Dizzle, on the other hand, opted not to play soccer this year. After four seasons of watching her struggle (she's pretty much the opposite of Doodle), we agreed that she needed to find something better suited to her.

Apparently, that's cheerleading. *cue shock and awe from this uber-tomboy*

Dizzle (far right) "looking cute"

first attempts at stunting (not sure if that's even a proper term)

She loves it and if we're being honest, she's actually quite good at it. Thankfully, she's also quite good at running and she can't deny that she has perfect form. Now, if I could only convince her that running is as much fun as cheering. It would probably help me cope better.

Three Things Thursday ...

Ironman - It's no secret that I have my eyes set on becoming an Ironman. And being completely impatient like I am, I really would like it to happen sooner rather than later. So, like any completely insane rational person, I narrowed down potential races to my top four, based on location, course, weather and time of year.

And thanks to my very scientific methods, I was left with the following (2013 races, of course) ...
At which point, I texted the list to my fellow potential Ironman Jill and we decided on which one would be our Ironman debut.

Ha. You didn't think I was going to tell you which one, did you?

I mean, someday I will, but not until that registration fee has been processed.

Anyway, I'm totally psyched and mildly freaked out about this. When I threw it out to J, shockingly, he didn't totally scoff. But, he wasn't entirely on board either. So, I think I need some ideas of how to frame it in the best light.

That's where you all come in. J reads this and all of the comments you leave. Let him know how you think this is an epic idea, how it won't be a total time suck and that he's wicked awesome (which he is. But, sucking up never hurts, right?).

Oh, and if you think this is a horrible idea, just pretend like I never mentioned it ...

Open Water - Since I had a complete mild freak out during the swim portion of Ironman 70.3 Texas, I decided that I needed to get some more practice swimming in open water. And the perfect way to do force yourself to do that is to sign up for an Open Water Race Series. Each of the races is 1500m, with the first taking place on April 29th. *cue panic attack*

In an attempt to determine what I had gotten myself into, I checked out last year's race results.

Big mistake.

In my age group (30 and under), the slowest finishing time in any of the races was 14:40.

Do you know what my fastest 1500m time is?

31:31.

And that was in a pool. I am so going to get schooled. (Note: Only 2 people finished in over 30 minutes. There is a real possibility that I could finish dead last.)

Free Sneakers - Did you know that I am giving away a pair of New Balance 890s to one lucky reader? Well, have you entered yet? Then you should probably get on that. Just CLICK HERE to find out all the details.

Three Things Thursday ...

Fired Up - Last night, I hit the pool for my final pre-race workout - 800m. When I got there the place was a zoo. A third of the pool was closed for swim lessons. Another third was open swim (i.e. creepy men standing in and around the pool). Then in the middle of the two were two lone swim lanes.

As I walked over, I noticed a man floating on his back down the lane. Once he drifted (very slowly) to the end, I asked if I could join. In broken English, he told me I could have the lane, he would leave. Awesome!

I started. Halfway through I knew I was crushing it. I was in the zone. With about 150m left, two 14 year old girls jumped in my lane. No biggie. I just started circle swimming. 35m later one of them was on my heels. She passed me, flip-turned and kept moving. Her friend, however, was standing at the end of the lane when I got there. As I popped up (no flip-turns for me), she threw me a "Oh, that swimming thing you are trying to do is so nice" look.

I nearly decked her.

Seriously, kid?

Who the heck cares that your 50m split is twice as fast as mine? Can you freaking swim 1.2 miles and then bike 56 and run 13.1? No? I didn't think so.

You're an athlete. I'm an athlete. Respect that.

Packing Worries - After I posted this picture yesterday, I got a slew of emails and comments with suggestions of things that I had forgotten.

I want you all to stop worrying. Although, I truly appreciate that you took time out of your day to help me out, I am fully prepared. Those bags already had things in them when I took the picture. I have 3 checklists that I am working off of. I have back ups of back ups. It's all good.

Oh, and I will be wearing my Team Tough Chik tri kit the WHOLE TIME. The swim suit is there just in case I get the chance to swim on Friday or Saturday.

Stalk Me - So, I have no idea whether or not Ironman has live race tracking, but if you want to attempt to follow me my bib number is 1066 and my wave starts at 7:45 a.m. Central.

You might also be able to find me under the name Honey Badger. OK, not really, but if you see a picture of Lance, look really far into the background and I'm probably there ...

a trifecta of letters ...

Dear Run,

We've been together for a long time. You were the one who helped me lose the baby weight and the one that showed me just how powerful I am. You nourished my soul and strengthened my being. And I will forever love you for that.

But, I'm not in love with you.

I'm sorry. It just kind of happened. For a long time, I tried to fake it, but you're just not my number one anymore. Maybe, one day you'll regain that title, but for now, I think it best that you realize that things have changed. You will always be in my heart. I hope you can wait.

Love,
TMB

Dear Bike,

I'd love to tell you that you are awesome and that I can't wait to spend hours on end with you, but that would be a lie. You still freak the heck out of me. I like you a lot more when I visit you on my trainer, but even then you leave me wanting more. I mean, is it really too much to ask you not to crush my lady parts? No, I didn't think so.

All the best,
TMB

Dear Swim,

By now, you may have heard about what is going on between me and Run. We are going through a rough patch and I just don't love him like I used to. And if we are being honest, it's entirely your fault.

Sure, you make me look like a fool with those latex caps and tinted goggles, but you make me feel so free and strong. Rarely is there a day when I wish for our time together to end. Just this morning, I added 1000 meters to my workout just to be with you longer.

I'm so sorry for all of the horrible things I said about you in the past. I didn't mean them. I just didn't know you well enough to understand your appeal. I never should have doubted you. Please forgive me.

Submerged in love,
TMB

16 days ...

I haven't taken a rest day in 16 days.

It's not that I set out to do this, but rather, life necessitated it.

At first, I had to shift workouts around to fit my schedule. Then, J was out of town for a few days and single parenting drove me insane. An insane TMB needs some stress relief. And since we don't have any chocolate in the house, I ran. Or biked. So before I knew it, two weeks had past with no days off and I still had two more workouts on my training plan before the next rest day. Oops.

By the time my weekend sweat sessions rolled around, I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Rest was on the horizon, but first, two big workouts stood before me.

1600 meters in the pool, my furthest swim yet and a 12 mile run, my longest since my double marathons in November.

I was apprehensive about both. And I crushed both.

1600 meters in 37:08. 1 mile. No stopping. Total confidence boost.
12 miles in 1:51:39. Proof that running fewer miles isn't killing my endurance or speed.

In the last 16 days, I swam 6600 meters, biked 133.07 miles and ran 62.32 miles.

But today I rest.

I've earned it.

My muscles know it.

And that's why I'm rocking compression tights all day.

triathlon confession ...

Confession: I am a runner who is really loving triathlon training.

Confession: Swimming doesn't suck. Sure, it isn't easy, but I actually look forward to my swim workouts. Well, other than the 4:30 a.m. wake up call.

Confession: I have serious bike envy. Sleeper does the job, but this $190 bike is giving me an inferiority complex.

Confession: Running less while maintaining my workout volume is making me love running more. I appreciate every mile.

Confession: I registered for a Fall Sprint Triathlon. I can't wait to see what I can do when I actually train.

Confession: Once all of my kids are in school, I will be an Ironman. It might be in two years. It might be in 10. But it will happen.

So, what are you hiding from the rest of us?
